53 - Are you leading a mediocre - or less - career?

big thinking objectives tips Apr 13, 2025

You might be ticking boxes, doing "well enough," and showing up every day.
But deep down, do you ever feel like you are playing way below your potential?

You feel like you are meant for more - but you’ve somehow ended up stuck in the safe lane and don't know how to get out?

You are not alone. Most people are living lives that look fine on the outside but feel frustrating on the inside. This was me a few years ago, when I had a stable job with a great title, but deep down I felt utterly stuck as I wanted more in my career, in my life.

A few years ago, I came across Grant Cardone’s 10X Rule, and it completely changed how I approached my goals! Stay with me here, because at first it may seem pretty radical.

The idea is simple: whatever goal you have, multiply it by ten.

Want to make £100,000 a year? Aim for £1,000,000.
Want to launch a small business? Build a global brand.

At first, it felt extreme! But the more I sat with it, the more I realised: small thinking is the real dream-killer.

Throughout our lives we are taught to play it safe, and are conditioned to be realistic whilst also fearing failure and rejection. And when we’ve tried and failed before, our brain says, “Don’t get your hopes up.”

The thing about thinking small is that it guarantees average outcomes.

Why 10X Thinking Works

  • You Raise Your Game Instantly - Small goals = small actions. But when the goal is huge, your thinking is forced to change, your strategy, and effort automatically level up.
  • You Build Confidence by Doing - Even if you miss a 10X goal, you are far more likely outperform anything you originally aimed for. Confidence grows from taking bold action.
  • You Get Clear on What Actually Matters - Massive goals cut through the noise. You stop procrastinating and start taking control of what really matters.

How to Start Thinking 10X

When I first discovered this concept, I tested it out in my journal by adding a zero to my income target, my course sales goal and my financial freedom number. Believe me when I say it felt uncomfortable! But as Grant rightly shares in his book, that is the point.

By 10X'ing my goals it forced me to think bigger, and the approach that I take in achieving any of them is likley to be significantly different. But then again, so are the results.

How you can 10X your goals

  1. Multiply Your Goals
Look at your current goals and ask: What would this look like x10?
  2. Take 10X the Action
Expect success to take more effort than you think. And show up like you mean it.
  3. Get Around Big Thinkers
Join spaces that challenge you. Invest in your growth. Surround yourself with people who make your current goals feel small.

If you are not getting the results you would like in your career, how about 10X your thinking, goals, and results?
