72 - Your Career Is YOUR Responsibility!
Aug 27, 2025
Did you know that one of my biggest frustrations is when I hear people moan on and on about how they hate their job, their colleagues, their employer, they don’t get paid enough, they have to work in the office too much… yet they don’t do anything about it!
In reality - your career is your responsibility.
It does not mean that if you are unhappy in your career you have to figure it out alone, but it does mean that waiting for your manager, HR, your mum or friend to fix it for you won't solve your problems.
I say this with empathy because I have seen this time and time again, and I have been there too.
The thing that kept me stuck was not knowing what my next move was going to be. But my coach at the time gave me some wisdom I will never forget, “not doing anything is a choice too”. So I was choosing to stay stuck, and I was miserable.
It got so much worse over time, I was becoming more disengaged at work and it was seeping into my happiness at home too.
It was only when I started taking ownership of my career that things changed.
I made a choice, took a leap, invested in myself, and the new environment I found myself in gave me the clarity I was looking for. It gave me a new perspective, and I turned that into positive action - and everyday I am grateful for the fact that I did because my life has transformed into something that I love.
Three reasons why you need to take ownership of your career
- Doing nothing is still a decision
If you do not take action, you are still making a choice - to stay exactly where you are. That might feel safe for a while, but over time it chips away at your motivation, your confidence, and your sense of possibility. Ask yourself, what one action are you going to take today to make a change? - No one is coming to rescue you
Managers, HR teams, even supportive colleagues or family might help here and there, but they cannot design a fulfilling career for you. Only you can decide what you want and then take the steps to go after it. - Clarity comes from action, not waiting
You will not figure everything out in your head. The turning point for me was when I took a leap and invested in myself - surrounding myself with new perspectives, environments, and people. This is where you can find clarity too, and that clarity can give you energy to take action.
Ask yourself, what one action are you going to take today to make a change?
Maybe it is getting clear on where you are right now by asking yourself:
- What is working for me?
- What is draining me?
- What would a 10/10 career look and feel like?
If you are not sure, I created the Career Clarity Compass to help. It shows you the exact steps to identify what is working, what is not, and where to focus next so you can take meaningful action instead of staying stuck.
No one is going to care about your career as much as you do, and no one is going to save you if you feel stuck. And that is exactly why it is your responsibility.
The thing that I wish I had when I went through my career (and life transformation)?
A community.
Fortunately, you don’t need to do it alone.
I am building an amazing community of like minded people, who want to create their dream life one step at a time the same way I have. No get rich quick schemes, just clarity, focus and intentional action where it matters most.
If you would like to be part of something greater than yourself, with a bunch of lovely people who will support you on your journey then my group coaching programme starting this September may be the perfect thing for you.
